About the firm
Practical governance support, grounded in real experience
Cairn Dubh provides independent governance and compliance advice to voluntary organisations, charities, and community groups — helping them build structures that are fit for purpose and meet their legal obligations.
The name
Cairn Dubh
A cairn is a pile of stones erected on Highland paths and hilltops to mark the way. In difficult terrain — poor visibility, uncertain ground — a cairn provides a fixed point of reference that travellers can trust.
Dubh is the Scots Gaelic word for black: the colour of the basalt stones found across much of Highland Scotland, and historically associated with solidity and permanence.
The name captures what we offer: a reliable point of reference when the path ahead is not clear. Good governance is not an obstacle to be managed — it is the waymarker that lets organisations move forward with confidence.
Mission & approach
Practical advice, not management consultancy
Direct
When you contact Cairn Dubh, you work directly with the adviser handling your engagement. There are no account managers, no handoffs, no junior staff processing your matter.
Independent
We carry no product affiliations, no software licences to sell, and no methodology to validate. Our advice is shaped entirely by what is right for the client.
Bespoke
Governance is not uniform. We begin every engagement by understanding the organisation's context, history, and constraints — and design our work accordingly.
Our values
The principles that guide every engagement
Integrity
We tell clients what they need to hear. This sometimes means delivering uncomfortable findings about structures, behaviours, or cultures. We believe that frank advice, given with care, is the most valuable thing a consultant can offer.
Rigour
Our advice is grounded in evidence, relevant best practice, and considered professional judgement. We draw on governance codes, regulatory frameworks, and sector-specific guidance — and we explain our reasoning.
Independence
Independence is not just a commercial proposition — it is an ethical one. We maintain no relationships that could, even in appearance, compromise the objectivity of our advice to any client.
Partnership
The best governance improvements are those that an organisation owns. We work alongside our clients, building understanding and capability as we go — not arriving with a solution and departing before it is embedded.
